Entomology is the study of insects. The insect population present on a body or at a crime scene, and the stages of development represented in those populations, can be used to estimate a timeframe for the death of the individual. The study of insects can also be used to infer the movement of a body from one location to another.

Entomology can assist with cases where:

  • A body has been found, but the time or date of death is not known
  • It is not clear whether the place where the body has been found is the original deposition location
  • The body of a person who is missing, presumed murdered, has not been found but insects or insect remains are found in an area where the body might have been stored
  • A living individual is infested with insects and there is a need to understand whether this might be a result of neglect
