Course Summary

Photogrammetry is the science of creating reliable and measurable data about physical objects and environments from photographs. A key principle of photogrammetry is the ability to obtain three-dimensional measurements and information from two-dimensional photographs. The output of photogrammetry can be maps, technical drawings, measurements, as well as highly detailed photo-realistic 3D models of objects, scenes or wider landscapes. This technique can be a vital resource for visualising a crime scene both as an analytical tool to assist the investigation and in court.

This presentation will focus on cases involving Specialist Forensic Services input and provide an understanding of:

  • The range of subjects that can be modelled using photogrammetry, from the capture of small features through to large landscapes
  • The use of drones (UAVs) and hand-held photographic surveys to capture photogrammetry data
  • The benefits of photogrammetry over other common survey methods
  • Types of information that can be extracted from 3D digital models
  • The wide range of different products and visualisations that can be generated from photogrammetry data
  • The application of photogrammetry data, from analysis to briefings, training, and court presentations.
