Cellmark is an accredited supplier of DNA profiles to the UK National DNA Database®.
From our laboratories in Oxfordshire and Lancashire we provide an extensive range of forensic laboratory services for the investigation of a wide range of offences. This includes the examination of exhibits to recover evidence of human contact such as body fluids and other cellular material, from which we can obtain DNA and produce DNA profiling information.
Our forensic laboratories operate within quality systems accredited to ISO17025 and certified to ISO9001, where we maintain a clear physical separation of crime scene material from reference DNA samples taken from suspects and victims of crime. Cellmark provides DNA profiling services to the majority of the police forces in England and Wales and operates one of the largest throughput forensic crime scene DNA laboratories in the world.
Cellmark is an accredited supplier of DNA profiles to the UK National DNA Database® which accepts DNA-17 profiles (16 STR (short tandem repeat) markers plus the gender indicative marker Amelogenin). We have chosen to use the multiplex kits developed by Life Technologies (Thermo Fisher Scientific): NGM SElect™ (for crime scene DNA samples) and NGM SElectPlus™ (for reference and PACE samples), although other DNA-17 kits are also available from Cellmark.
Cellmark has been accredited to submit profiles to the National DNA Database® since 1998. Mouth swabs or plucked hairs taken under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) are processed in Cellmark’s state-of-the-art laboratory facility in Oxfordshire where extensive investment in automation and laboratory robotics ensures that we provide a rapid and efficient service for our police customers.
Each month Cellmark's DNA laboratories process thousands of samples recovered by the police from crime scenes. Through our contracts with police forces Cellmark is the largest contributor of crime scene DNA profiles to the UK National DNA Database® and has gained the reputation of delivering industry leading success rates and rapid turnaround times from a wide range of evidence types.
DNA-17 is the primary DNA profiling system used in criminal investigations in the UK. It is a highly sensitive DNA analysis system and allows the identification of DNA information from small and poor quality samples. Cellmark is experienced at maximising the DNA information retrieved from samples by using a range of extraction techniques and enhancement procedures to maximise sensitivity, and probabilistic statistical analysis tools to interpret the results when DNA from more than one person is present.
Cellmark has developed and accredited a range of specialist DNA services including our own innovative ‘high-sensitivity’ DNA enhancement procedure; a range of alternative STR multiplexes to provide additional DNA information particularly to assist with differentiating close biological relationships; a powerful Y-STR profiling system valuable for investigating sexual offences; an ISO17025 accredited mitochondrial DNA sequencing service for obtaining DNA information from hair shafts and ancient bone samples; and DNA tests to determine the exact species of a non-human sample.
Cellmark’s range of specialist DNA services can be accessed on an as-and-when-required basis to provide a second opinion that can lead to case progress.
