Vacancy: Laboratory Technician

Job Title:
Laboratory Technician Manufacturing Operations
Summary of Job:
To provide an efficient manufacturing service to all key business operations.  This support will include preparation and QC of materials required for the operations and general assistance on all projects undertaken by the Manufacturing Operations.
Reporting Relationship:
Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, Manufacturing Operations.  This role will interact with staff in many different internal departments.
Principal Accountabilities:

    Production of laboratory reagents and other components for use in Orchid Cellmark’s genotyping laboratories.  This is done by:

  • Receipt and preparation of raw materials
  • Organisation and planning to tight deadlines
  • Small and large scale solution preparation
  • Preparation of finished components
  • QC release of finished goods to customers/central stores
  • Equipment maintenance
  • General assistance on all projects undertaken by the support services team.
  • Efficient stock control and ordering non-stock items
  • Preparation of all required documentation to comply with a range of regulatory and QC requirements
  • All work carried out to GLP standards

Job Requirements:
Education:
  • Minimum of GCSE’s in Maths, English and Science l.
Experience:
  • Manufacturing/production experience an advantage
  • Knowledge of Quality Systems
  • The importance of cleanliness and DNA contamination
  • Good understanding of molecular biology methods and their applications.
Technical Skills:
  • Good laboratory skills, knowledge of DNA techniques would be an advantage
  • Attention to detail
  • Familiarity with the use of computers
  • Ability to work to GLP
  • Ability to use the functionality of Work Bench Professional
  • Use of Great Plains for MRP
  • Accurate pipetting and weighing
  • Methods of DNA removal
  • Basic solution preparation
Non-Technical Skills:
  • Attention to detail and concern for impact is essential

  • Excellent record keeping skills

Physical Demands:
  • Sedentary, walking and standing
  • Handling, seizing, holding, opening, closing and grasping of objects, tools and controls
  • Reaching
  • Vision - close vision and use on VDU’s
  • This role requires good concentration, meticulous attention to detail, skilled sample processing and accurate record keeping
  • Occasional carrying of large quantities of liquids in open and closed containers
  • Requirement for weekend working as dictated by the workload
Working Conditions:
  • Clean modern air-conditioned laboratories and a workstation in a shared office.
  • Normal hours (7.5 hours per day) within the range 07.00 - 19.00 however some flexibility may be required to deal with urgent work demands.
  • The position will be mostly laboratory based with some desk work
  • For significant periods of time this role will involve working alone in a laboratory
