Vacancy: Forensic Analyst, Volume Crime

- Summary of Job:
- To undertake DNA analysis of samples submitted to the forensic laboratory.
- Reporting Relationship:
- Reports to Forensic Team Leader
- Principal Accountabilities:

- Examine forensic exhibits for the presence of DNA bearing material, make notes and record continuity details prior to submission for DNA profiling
- Log all incoming samples on a computerised tracking system and update as the analysis proceeds to allow accurate monitoring of casework progress and to assist the Forensic Operations Manager in planning accurate production schedules.
- Perform PCR/STR analysis on forensic samples following Standard Operating Procedures under the supervision of the Team Leader, ensuring that quality, accuracy and safety standards are maintained.
- Retrieve data from the computerised tracking system and prepare result sheets for checking and signing by Team Leader or Laboratory Manager. Ensure that the laboratory is kept clean and tidy.
- Assist with exploratory work and validation as defined by the Laboratory Manager Speculative Crime.
- On occasions it may be necessary to attend court and give evidence regarding samples that have been analysed.

- Education:

- B.Sc. Degree or similar level qualification in Biology related discipline.
- Competencies:
-
- Some experience in a laboratory environment, preferably handling DNA samples and carrying out genotyping activity.
- Working to GLP standards.
- Technical Skills:
-
- Knowledge of computers.
- Experience in DNA testing
- Proficient operation of ABI 3100 sequencers.
- Solid background in biology and/or genetics.
- General laboratory skills.
- Non-Technical Skills:

- Excellent communication skills.
- Attention to detail and concern for impact is essential.
- Assists other departments as necessary.

- Must wear Personal Protective Equipment as required by site specific Standard Operating Procedures.

- Working Conditions:

- Clean, modern air conditioned laboratories and a computer workstation in a shared office.
- Normal hours are 8:30 until 5:00 however some flexibility may be required to deal with urgent casework demands.
