Job Title:
Forensic Analyst (L1) - Abingdon
Summary of Job:
To undertake DNA analysis of submitted biological materials.
Reporting Relationship:
Reports to Forensic Team Leader/no direct reports
Principal Accountabilities:
  • PCR/STR analysis on Forensic EZ1 samples following Standard Operating Procedures under close supervision of the Team Leader, ensuring that quality, accuracy and safety standards are maintained.
  • Examination of forensic exhibits for the presence of DNA bearing material, make notes and record continuity details prior to DNA profiling.
  • Receipt and logging on of incoming samples.
  • Basic knowledge of expert witness training, preparation of statements and giving evidence in court regarding samples that have been analysed.
  • Responding to routine enquiries to a high standard.

Education:
  • Minimum ‘A’ level, preferably BSc or HND in a Molecular Biology or Applied Biology subject
Experience:
  • Some laboratory experience an advantage.
Technical Skills:
  • Ability to work to GLP
  • Familiarity with EZ1 DNA Extraction Method
  • Familiarity with electrophoresis equipment (e.g. 3100)
  • Good knowledge of Molecular Biology Methods DNA/PCR essential.
  • Understanding of Quality systems e.g. Iso.
  • Understanding of and ability to use computerised sample tracking system
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel / Word to carry out data input/manipulation.

  • VDU Operation
  • Routine laboratory procedures requiring manual dexterity
Working Conditions:
  • Clean, modern air conditioned labs; computer workstation in a shared office.
  • Will be required to take part in out of hours and week end working rotas
  • Occasional requirement to be on call for emergencies
